a few thoughts from Achan Niphen after attending
"A Half Century of Luangpor Teean's Enlightenment" at Mahidol University in Thailand in July.
Practicing alone vs. with a teacherMany monks and lay practitioners talked about their experiences and impressions, how lucky they were to practice under Luangpor Teean's instruction directly at "A Half Century of Luangpor Teean's Enlightenment" at Mahidol University. Many tried to practice after reading his books or watching his VCD and got it without a teacher. Many people learned from other teachers of his students. It was the blessing seeing, listening and learning from the enlightened master. He could guide us directly and closely on the path of vipassana. Inspiration from the master is also the best motivation for our practice. The Buddha gave monks instruction and encouraged them to practice alone under trees, at a cemetery, an empty house or beside a pile of rice straw." Delight in solitude." In that way they saw themself clearly and were enlightened. If we attach to our teacher, it is an obstacle. Many people from Luangpor Tean's hometown came to see him to take care of him a few days before he died.
"There is nothing you can do for this dying body, go practice " he said.
Maha Lai, the previous abbot of a St. Louis temple tried to practice in the bathroom, being afraid of people seeing him doing this strange hands movements. He realized that it could cut through thought, it amazed him. After that he didn't care whether people saw him or not, he got confidence. He came to spend a rainy retreat with Luangpor Kamkian at Wat Pa Sukato. After that he moved to his hometown and established the monastery there to be a meditation center for all people, especially school kids. He said this meditation helped thousands kids to get off of drugs.
When I realized the stage of roop-nahm or supposition object, I was sitting alone in front of a outdoor Buddha statue . I didn't look for others or a teacher. Luangpor Tean encouraged me to practice alone at my hometown after I became a monk. There, at the cemetery, I reviewed the roop-nahm stage, developing self-awareness. A few days later I saw thought clearly and made progress without a teacher.
You need a teacher when you get caught, especially when you don't know you are trapped.

Hello Everybody,
I am writing this message from Janlan Cemetery, Kuchinarai, Kalasin Thailand where I learned a great deal from developing self-awareness and seeing thought when I was a new monk in 1986, by myself. I saw the step of roop-nahm (body-mind) or supposition object completely at Wat Sanamnai near Bangkok before I became a monk.
Developing self-awareness using bodily movement is always the key and the solid ground for all practitioners; beginners and experienced. I can feel every finger hitting the keyboards now. It is easy when it becomes second nature. And I can figure out what to do on this message.
Doing sitting meditation using hands movements is great and powerful technique to develop self-awareness continuously, formally. Every single unit of the feeling at our hand movement is the right effort; wandering thought can’t take us away as long as you come back to feel these movements. You should not follow thought or contemplate while developing self-awareness. Pure awareness is enough.
Walking meditation give us more opportunity to feel at our foot while touching the floor or we can feel the whole leg at once. It can cut through any kind of thought that is arising. It can also solve the problem of sleepiness and boredom. I suggested many monks and lay practitioners at Tubmingkwan retreat at Loei to walk and hit harder when they told me that they had too many thoughts proliferated, last week. It worked for them. They keep practicing now to finish 40 days intensive retreat.
We can’t ignore other postures or movements; walking to the restroom, taking tea, changing posture, driving, writing, etc. You have to trust the power of self- awareness.
Seeing thought is the goal of developing self-awareness. Actually, you can’t see thought until you see the step of body-mind clearly. You notice when thought arises and comeback to feel the movement. Practice without expectation is important , or you may waste your time. When you see thought it is clear, thought disappear immediately. It won’t proliferate.
It is not fun for people who like to fool around with thoughts. But I can guarantee everyone who practices earnestly. Don’t make it hard for yourself. It will be easy if you let every single thought pass and come back to feel your movement. You can’t control thought.
Enjoy weekend meditation
